Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
